What is the ISO 17100 standard?

The ISO 17100 standard is a globally recognized quality standard for translation service providers (LSP – Language Service Providers). It is designed to ensure high-quality translations based on clearly defined and transparent standards. Since 2015, it has replaced the previously applicable DIN EN 15038, which was only used within the EU, with an international standard. This makes the new certificate globally valid and recognized.

ISO 17100 specifies in detail the requirements a translation service provider must meet, as well as the processes and procedures that must be followed. It consists of several areas:

  • Ressourcen (Übersetzer und Übersetzerinnen, Redigierende, Projektleitende und Subdienstleister sowie technische Infrastruktur),
  • Produktionsvorbereitung (Anfrage- und Angebotsbearbeitung, Projektvorbereitung und Spezifikation),
  • Produktionsnachbereitung (Kunden-Feedback und abschliessende Verwaltungsprozesse).

Certification of ISO 17100 translation services always involves a comparison between target and actual states. Internal processes, from the first customer call to issuing the invoice, must be structured and standardized. In the second step, it is then verified whether these rules are actually followed.

What is checked during ISO 17100 certification?

During the DIN ISO 17100 audit, we review your existing processes and procedures for your translations together with you.

The following areas are examined in detail during certification:

  • Maintenance and Updating of Required Competencies
How do you ensure that internal processes and quality standards are followed? How are changes introduced and implemented?
  • Analysis and Processing of Inquiries
When an inquiry is received, a process is required to handle it. During certification, you demonstrate how inquiries are processed, how quotations are prepared, and which procedures are used for concluding contracts.
  • Language Specifications
How are specifications documented in your company and communicated to translators? This is an important element of continuous quality control and improvement.
  • Project Review
In a translation project, specifications must not only be documented, but also applied. For this, you need a review at the project level.
  • Accounting and Payment Process
The financial handling of a project must comply with internationally accepted practices and legal requirements. During certification, the focus is on the process used to manage payments and invoices.
  • Archiving and Compliance with All Legal and Contractual Obligations
Today, a translation agency is expected to stay up to date with current legal requirements. This includes proper archiving and continuous monitoring of compliance. During certification, your internal procedures for this are documented.
  • Customer Satisfaction and Corrective Measures
ISO 17100 is intended to provide your customers with greater transparency regarding the quality of your services. An important process is customer service, feedback, and quality improvement.
  • Information Security

What advantages does certification offer for LSPs?

There are three key advantages for you as a translation service provider:

  • You can demonstrate your quality standards to your customers.
  • You have an advantage over the competition.
  • You optimize your internal processes and become more efficient.

The internationalization of standard regulations now allows you to offer ISO 17100 translation globally. As a certified translation service provider, you are able to objectively demonstrate your quality to customers. This builds trust in your services. Decision-makers have a better basis for choosing you as a translation service provider.

In competition, you can use the certification seal in all advertising and marketing activities. This gives you an advantage over competitors who do not want to invest in certification. In tenders, you can convincingly demonstrate that you comply with verified standards.

Since workflows and processes in your company are analyzed and optimized during the certification process, quality and efficiency improve automatically. You reduce costs, use your resources more effectively, and are able to consistently deliver high-quality translations.

Brief Note on DIN EN ISO 17100

The DIN EN ISO 17100 standard (or simply ISO 17100) is a globally valid standard for certifying translation service providers (LSPs) and a guarantee of high-quality translation. As a consistent extension of DIN EN 15038, which was harmonized across Europe until 2015, DIN EN ISO 17100 is the recognized international ISO standard for certification. The meaning of ISO refers to the International Organization for Standardization, which develops international standards. The abbreviation EN is assigned to a standard once it is recognized by the European Committee for Standardization. When an EN standard is adopted by a national standards body into national regulations, it also gains the status of a national standard (DIN = German Institute for Standardization).

Is there a certification for machine translation (MT)?

Aspects of machine translation (MT) and post-editing are covered in the DIN EN ISO 18587 standard, which forms a consistent pair with ISO 17100 and can be certified together.

Where can I find in-depth information on DIN EN ISO 9001 and DIN EN ISO 17100?

In contrast to DIN EN ISO 9001, ISO 17100 does not aim to represent a complete management system. A comparison of the scope of coverage between DIN EN ISO 9001 and DIN EN ISO 17100 can be found in our eBook «ISO 1700 – Translating with a System».
